Porta-what?

Hi Followers!
I just finished doing my first Portaportal.I had never heard of a Portaportal before but I believe that this tool is definitely something I could and will use in the classroom during my future teaching career. I could not only use it for personal use, but students could benefit from it, as well. Using a Portaportal is a great tool for creating lesson plans. Instead of having to either write down or bookmark five different websites for a unit, a teacher could put all the links in the Portaportal and have easy access to them at all times. They could also add the link to the online state standards for that unit plan. Students could use them to organize references for citations, projects, etc. The teacher could possibly create more than one portaportal and have one for her students to have access to. It could have links to online encyclopedias, dictionaries, and thesauruses.

This tool could improve a student's learning in several ways. The student could revisit websites that they put on their portaportal and use them for future assignments. Instead of throwing all their references away, they have it all stored in one location. This tool is great, too, because it is simple and easy to use.

I'm glad I am now aware of this tool...it will come in handy!!

  1. Mallory, I too made a post about the Portaportal. I enjoyed reading your post too, however, because you made me think about a new option that I had not thought of previously. The suggestion about using the portaportal to help with lesson plans is a great idea. I wish I had known about this a year or so ago. Toggling back and forth, back and forth is never fun. With the portaportal it would have made my life much easier, especially when adding the site for Tennessee State Standards. I'm definitely going to use mine for future lesson plans. In fact, I have to create an entire unit with a base theme this semester and I'm going to utilize the portaportal in hopes of making it easier to put together.

Also something that I had not thought of right off of the bat was the idea of having a separate portaportal for my students. I also enjoy this idea as well. I think it would be a great resource guide for the students. It makes assigning homework and projects a lot easier too, in knowing that you can mark the sites that you want your students to have access to and know that they will not be without quality resources, etc. Thanks so much for the suggestions. I had already thought it was a great new tool, but it just goes to show that hearing other ideas is always a good thing as well!

  2. What a nice idea to have students create one of their own. It could be a group project or even an evolving one as students find more sites helpful and keep adding more information as needed or used.It is indeed simple to use and actually fun to play with and personalize. They could leave reference to it for the students coming in the following year.

  3. I had heard of teachers using Portaportal when I was in school sometimes, but I never really knew what one was until I had to make one for this class. I really like it! And I agree it does and will come in handy! As a teacher for upper grades, like you said this could be helpful in having them store their references. Actually, this could work for lower grades as well. I also liked the idea of each student having their own. It could be like a research portfolio that students can keep up with through the year or years. It could be another way to access children's learning without paper and pencil. Also, it would come in handy for storying research for PBL projects. I will definitely continue to use Portaportal for myself and my future students.
